The lie of doing it all at once

Somewhere along the way, multitasking stopped being a description and became a virtue — a thing we list on résumés and brag about surviving. We answer email during meetings, text during dinner, listen to a podcast while reading the news while half-watching a show. It feels productive, even heroic. It is, by almost every measure researchers have, making us slower, more error-prone and more drained than if we simply did one thing at a time.

The uncomfortable fact is that the human brain cannot actually do two attention-demanding things simultaneously. What it does instead is switch — rapidly, constantly — and every switch carries a small cost in time and focus, a tax you pay over and over without noticing. By the end of a day of 'multitasking,' you've done several things at a fraction of your real ability and feel wrung out for it. The efficiency was always an illusion.

Monotasking is a skill you've lost

The alternative has an almost comically simple name — monotasking, doing one thing at a time — and for most of us it now requires real practice to relearn. Sit with a single task and watch how quickly the urge to check something else arrives, how physically uncomfortable undivided attention has become. That discomfort is the measure of how thoroughly we've trained ourselves out of focus, and the good news is that training runs both ways.

Start absurdly small: one task, phone in another room, for twenty-five minutes. Just the one thing — the work, the conversation, the meal — given your whole attention. It feels strange and then, surprisingly fast, it feels like relief. There's a calm on the other side of single-tasking that the scattered mind never reaches: the quiet of doing one thing well instead of five things anxiously.

Presence is the actual goal

This isn't only about productivity; it's about being present for your own life. The cost of constant multitasking isn't just worse work — it's a kind of perpetual half-absence, never fully anywhere. The meal you barely tasted because you were scrolling. The conversation you don't remember because you were half in your inbox. We're physically present for thousands of moments we're never actually in, and at the end we wonder where the time went.

Mindfulness, stripped of any mysticism, is mostly just this: the trained ability to be where you are, doing what you're doing, without the mind fleeing to ten other places. It turns out the most ordinary activities — washing dishes, walking, eating — become quietly restorative the moment you actually do only them. The task didn't change. Your presence in it did.

We talk about giving people our attention as a courtesy, and it is one — but the first person who deserves it is you, in your own life. The hours you live half-present are gone in a way the multitasking never gets back. So pick one thing today and do only it. Let the rest wait the twenty-five minutes; it always could. Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity — start by giving it to your own life, one single, undivided task at a time.
